The beautiful sounds of music, energetic displays of dance and powerful poetry filled the Factreton Community Centre on Saturday.
About 60 people, mainly youth from the area, had gathered for the Cape Cultural Collective’s second visit to the area. A joyful and celebratory spirit prevailed throughout the three hour programme.
In mid-August, CCC Board member Jill Levenberg, sometimes known as Moena Samsodien from Suidooster fame, got a CCC team to connect with youth in her hometown Kensington/Factreton.
She hopes that some of the young people can be drawn into arts projects run by the CCC. She worked with local councillor Cheslyn Steenberg and his team.
The children are drawn from the inspiring Butterfly Project and Boys at Risk initiative, run by local community activists. The activists joined hands with a CCC team to organise Saturday’s jam session.
We hope these early initiatives will develop into longer-term partnerships.
