Media Release: The Cape Cultural Collective returns to Artscape with the production Just Our Journey
A year after its sold-out 10th anniversary Big Bash show, the CCC returns to the Artscape Theatre for its annual Heritage Month programme with a production called JUST OUR JOURNEY.
Through poetry, music and dance, an array of top performers will combine to reflect the incredible story of the CCC from humble beginnings in a City pub to a powerful arts and culture movement.
The show, which is co-hosted by the CCC and Artscape, takes place at the Artscape Theatre on Monday 24 September at 7.30pm. Tickets are R100, from Computicket.
The powerful line-up of artists includes Jill Levenberg of Suidooster and The Ellen Pakkies Story fame, super saxophonist Don Vino Prins, the ever-rising Rosa choir, opera maestros The Gentlemen’s Ensemble, the incredible Blackroots Marimba, the young energetic dancers of Likhwezi Arts Project, powerful poet Khadija Heeger, the other abled Unmute, the fabulous drag artist Manila von Teez, ethnomusicology artists Azanian Aesthetics and Hip-Hop group In the Key of B.
The Director of The Big Bash is Shihaam Domingo, who has been involved in great productions in the City. The talented and versatile young musician Dillon April is the Musical Director.
“I am amazed by the CCCs depth of work and the impact it makes through choirs, cultural programmes, youth development and social cohesion initiatives,” said Domingo.
“This is a story that deserves to be told and I feel privileged to be directing this particular production,” she said.
The CCC was initiated by a few former anti-apartheid activists and young post-apartheid poets who teamed up to host monthly cultural programmes featuring poetry, music and dance. The programmes are now in their eleventh year, with growing quality and impact over time.
The CCC has several other successful projects under its belt including the amazing Rosa choir, a multilingual and diverse choral group, the junior Rosa choir and a poetry anthology that incorporates the work of nine poets.
In 2010 the group organised four major community concerts to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the University of the Western Cape. In 2013, the CCC sent four poets to France where they performed a production called Uhadi, at the Paris Autumn Festival.
Two more choirs came into being in 2017 and 2018, the Young at Heart choir in Bishop Lavis and the Wesley Practising School choir.
This year, the CCC received funding from the Foundation for Human Rights for six human rights themed events across the City. Four have already been completed with huge success, including concerts and human rights workshops in Bonteheuwel and Tambo Village.
The projects all reflect the CCC’s values of non-racialism, inclusivity, non-sexism and development. They incorporate all the languages and cultures of our region.
“We had no idea that the CCC would flourish in the way it has,” said Mansoor Jaffer, CCC chairperson.
“The Artscape production brings together the artists, activists and audiences that together keep the dynamic Arts sector going and growing,” he said.
“We look forward to Just Our Journey as another major step in the unfolding CCC story,” he concluded.

Media Release: Some of the country’s finest in line-up for The Big Bash, 10th anniversary celebration of the Cape Cultural Collective
A powerful line-up of comedy, poetry, dazzling dance and an incredible array of musical performances will be on show in The Big Bash, a production that celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Cape Cultural Collective.
The show, which is co-hosted by the CCC and Artscape, takes place at the Artscape Theatre
on Thursday 21 September at 8pm. Tickets are R120, from Computicket.
The production includes some of the country’s and city’s finest performers including the legendary Dizu Plaatjies, comedian and actor Riaad Moosa and respected Flamenco guitarist Bienyameen Camroodien.
The line-up is completed by the incredible vocalist Ernestine Deane and her band, the Young Men Malay choir, the energetic Jazzart Dancers, the magical Rosa Choir, James Bhemjee and the Cape Flats tenors and poets Ziqu Profound Ndabizetha, Khadija Tracey Heeger and Chris Ferndale.
Plaatjies and Camroodien will be accompanied by a group of musicians and dancers, who will respectively bring enchanting African traditional and Flamenco entertainment to the stage.
Plaatjies, an ethnomusicologist, toured more than 150 countries with the popular group Amampondo. Moosa performs nationally and internationally and has had acting roles in the movies Material and Long Walk to Freedom. Camroodien is the most senior Flamenco guitarist in the country and heads up the popular band Los Gitanos.
Ernestine Deane is well-known as the vocalist of iconic SA hip hop band Moodphase5ive and respected as a solo artist in music, film and theatre performance. She has a career spanning more than two decades.
The Director of The Big Bash is Basil Appolis who has been responsible for several acclaimed productions. The talented and versatile Camillo Lombard is the musical director.
“The Cape Cultural Collective has been nurturing the dream of uniting people from diverse backgrounds through arts and culture,” said Appolis.
“It includes everything that I love, the genres of music, the dynamic choir, the poetry, rap and dance, from flamenco to the riel,” he added.
“I am privileged and honoured to be directing this exciting production that celebrates their ten- year journey, “said Appolis.
This production reflects on the development of the CCC from small steps in a local pub to a dynamic arts and culture platform in the City.
